“Which gold should I buy?” is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is: it depends on what the piece has to do. Here is what the numbers mean and how we choose them.
Karat is a fraction, not a grade
Pure gold is 24 karat. Every other number tells you how many parts out of 24 are gold: 22K is 91.6% gold, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5%. The rest is an alloy — silver, copper, zinc — added for strength and colour. Higher karat means richer colour and softer metal; lower karat means a harder, more durable piece.
Why studded jewellery is 14K or 18K
Diamonds and gemstones are held by prongs and beads only a fraction of a millimetre thick. In 22K those prongs bend; over years a stone can loosen and be lost. 14K and 18K are firm enough to hold a stone for a lifetime while still reading unmistakably as gold. Tip: Choose 22K for plain, traditional pieces you want in the deepest yellow; choose 14K or 18K for anything with stones or a fine, delicate profile.
Reading the hallmark
Every gold piece we sell carries a BIS hallmark. Look for the BIS logo, the purity in karat and fineness (for example “18K750”), and the six-character HUID — a unique code you can verify in the BIS Care app. If any of the three is missing, the piece is not hallmarked, whatever the invoice says.

Rose, yellow or white?
Colour comes from the alloy, not the karat. More copper gives rose gold its warmth; palladium or nickel and a rhodium plating give white gold its cool tone; a balanced alloy keeps yellow gold classic. All three are available at the same purity, so pick the colour that suits your skin and the stones — the value of the gold is identical.
